"Musik für 2 Flügel und Tonbandgerät" (Music for 2 Pianos and Tape Recorder) is my take on an event dating back to 1983 Germany. The love story of two childhood friends (later music graduates) in East Berlin takes a dramatic turn when he escapes to West Berlin.
Remaining in East she is put under surveillance by the Stasi. Knowing that he resists making the contact until one day overwhelmed with love and longing he finally telephones her. Not a single word is exchanged between the lovers who instead ''talk'' through playing piano. Stasi officer, somewhat dumbfounded submits the report and the operation comes to a halt.
This music video is about love that does not stop at walls and barriers. It is also about the power of music, the language of which goes far above the ability of state functionaries and their sophisticated equipment.
In our current age of reviving nationalism, anti-migration, xenophobia and increasing border militarization, it can be easy to forget that it was precisely migration that played central role in shaping the world as we know it.
We all are migrants and being such we have only added to the richness and beauty of human history and culture.
Born in Latvia I moved to UK at the age of 25.
Music, history and world politics remain my passion and I enjoy combining these in my projects.
I think that perhaps the combination of music and film is a wonderful medium able to convey the message, better than just a written word.
